Pirri on pole for penultimate race

Qualifying 1 rundown from Dubai

08:55 36 cars are expected during this first qualifying session of the week-end, as the nr 9 RPM Dodge Viper Competition Coupe had a gearbox problem and could not repair it.

09:35 In nr 28 Damax Ascari, Phil Quaife is the first man on track, and he is the first to set provisional pole position with a lap of 2.07.065

09:39 Phil Quaife improves his time, with a lap of 2:06:265. Jonathan Lang is now second, in nr 31 Team Berlanga Ascari. In nr 22 BMS Scuderia Italia Aston Martin DBRS9 Mauro Casadei is third, and another Ascari is fourth, the nr 32 of Howard Spooner

09:50 Under the chequered flag, Diego Alessi sets the third time, and Jiri Skula, in the nr 17 Martini Callaway Racing Corvette, the fourth time.

However, afterwards it was announced that Gilles Vannelet had improved his time under yellow flags.  His best time was therefore cancelled, demoting him to 5th.  Pole position went to Luca Pirri, his second pole of the season, and vitally important for the Championship challenger.  Diego Alessi will start alongside him on the front row, in the BMS Scuderia Italia Aston Martin DBRS9.  The other Championship contender, Arnaud Peyroles, was 7th. The top 6 were within the same second.
